Causes Of Newborn Chapped Lips
Lips without moisture or dry lips are known as chapped lips. There is a host of reasons for the lips to become dry. Here are some common causes of newborn chapped lips.
1. Bad Habits
Some newborns develop the bad habit of sucking or licking their lips. This makes the lips even drier, as when the saliva dries up from the lips taking with it all the moisture present on the lips. Another bad habit that can also result in newborn chapped lips is breathing through the mouth. These bad habits of the newborns results in newborn chapped lips.
Newborn chapped lips are an indication of the fact that the body of the newborn is not adequately hydrated and it needs more water.
3. Most Exposed Part Of The Body
Lips are frequently exposed to sun, heat, dry air and wind and this makes it lose moisture when exposed for prolonged periods of time. Moreover the lips of a newborn have very thin skin without any protective hair or oil glands to lubricate it and thus it is highly prone to become dry when exposed to dry weather during the winter months.
4. Deficiency Of Vitamin B12
Newborn chapped lips could be due to the deficiency of some vitamins like Vitamin B12 or riboflavin.
- Vitamin B12 deficiency in newborns can be acquired through breast milk from their vitamin deficient mothers suffering from pernicious anemia.
- Along with Vitamin B12, Vitamin A and Vitamin C can cause chapped lips in neonates.

5. Excessive Of Vitamin A
Ingesting too much of Vitamin A can result in flaky red lips. Newborns can acquire the excessive amount of Vitamin from their mothers through breast milk.
